Guidelines for Submission
The Agora seeks to encourage critical thinking and interdisciplinarity among students and faculty. The Agora expresses the best in the liberal arts tradition of thoughtful inquiry. The journal welcomes papers of high quality that provide an original interpretation of texts, and/or challenge conventionally held views, assumptions, biases, or cultural practices. These papers may cross boundaries, juxtapose perspectives, test categories, strike new relationships, or question inherited knowledge(s).
Student papers published in the Agora should reflect the writers' ability to integrate ideas from readings from the classics and the great books in ways that demonstrate critical thinking and an awareness of the concerns of other disciplines.
Publishable papers may examine an issue in or associated with a "Great Books"-type text or use readings in similar core texts to provide the grounds for a discussion that moves through the liberal arts or into other fields, texts, or disciplines.
The Agora is committed to bias-free use of language.
Surface details: Writing should be clear and display a mastery of academic discourse.
Length of the articles may vary from 500 to 5,000 words.
Citations should occur in-text following either MLA or APA format, whichever is appropriate for the subject matter. Chicago style papers (using superscript numbers) must be converted.
Examples: MLA "…with no room for improvement" (Peters 89).
MLA "…with no room for improvement" (Peters, Migrains, 89).
APA ". . . with no room for improvement" (Peters, 1997, 89).
An alphabetized list of resources should be appended, following the bibliographic conventions of either the MLA or the APA citation style.
Submissions may be offered at any time during the academic year. However, only articles submitted by December 15 will be considered for publication in the same academic year. All submissions received after December 15 will be considered for the Agora in the following year. All submissions should include the student writer’s mailing address, phone number, and email address for contact purposes. The name and email address of the faculty member who supervised the paper should also be provided.
Writers will be notified of the status of their submissions in February or March. Revisions may be requested. The online issue will appear in May.
Submissions should be delivered via the online submission form. Fill out all fields, then proceed to upload your submission. Submissions must be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or Rich Text (.rtf) format.
